Yokel Addicts

A mini doc about the slightly obsessive hobby of record collecting and digging, and it just so happens to focus some diamond geezers I’m aquainted with from Swindon. Watch this and then check out what Para gets up to HERE and Baila and Joey right HERE. I was just thinking the other day it’s been too long since we had Para & Baila over to the Ox, they were original honorary Hiphopalypse/Blunted crew so I reckon I’ll try and sort something…

Ladies first…

•June 24, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Right, this is a post all about a load of new music that’s available to you reprobates absolutely free of charge. I have also grouped it together because it happens to have been created by ladies. I’ll try to avoid all of the ususal condescension involved when “femcees” (sorry, that term makes me angry as well) are mentioned.

I believe it was Duck of Bam Bam Sound who told me Shystie was back and sounding good. I have to say on the evidence available I would agree. She does verge on the grimey side of things so I thought it best to put that in as a warning, I know what sensitive flowers people can be about this sort of thing. She has a full mixtape that you can download for free from HERE (if this link dies go to her Facebook page and you’ll find one that works), you can like her on Facebook HERE or follow her virtually HERE.

Next up are a couple of mixtapes courtesy of DJBooth.net which looks like it’s a decent source of free legal mixtapes. First up is Rapsody, a member of the group Kooley High and a protege (without the accent because I don’t know how to do it on this keyboard) of 9th Wonder.

As a follow up to her original release late last year she is taking the H.E.R concept introduced by Common and running with it. Not only are the beats provided by 9th Wonder, Nottz, Vitamin D and others but it features some crazy names including Phonte and Raekwon.

Download the mixtape for free from DJBooth.net right HERE, like her fanpage on Facebook HERE and follow her in the Twitterverse HERE.

And last but certainly not least we have Ms Jean Grae who has supplied us with 11 tracks of new material hosted by DJ Drama. I’ve always been a fan of hers since the first time I heard her on a Herbaliser track back in the day. It features some great guests like Styles P, Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch and some top notch production as well.

You can download her mixtape from DJBooth HERE, like her page on Facebook HERE and follow her on Twitter (which is highly recommended) HERE.

New mix from DJ Ivory

•June 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Ivory is one half of the P Brothers, seen above pictured with Paul S (the other half) and the grand imperial Cappo. He had serious cratediggers scratching their heads with the release of his series of mix CDs titled Hear No Evil. If you own any of the records included on the first couple of volumes you need to take care of them, they’ll set you back a few hundred each to replace depending on what they are.

Here he wa uploaded a new mix to Soundcloud, seemingly for the 40th birthday of someone called Chris Dog. No idea who that is but I’m glad he turned 40 because it means we’ve been treated to a downloadable mix full of obscure soul gems. Check the player below and hit that down arrow for a download full of goodness.

Terri Walker – She’s back…

•June 15, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Those who know me know I get smooth with it sometimes, I’m a lover not a fighter etc etc. When modern British soul music is done well I’m a big fan. This post is all about Ms Terri Walker who I had the pleasure of seeing live at the Zodiac a few years back. This is the video for the first single to come off her forthcoming fourth studio album produced by the man like Ski Beatz.

She is also giving away a free downloadable mixtape on her blog right HERE and you can follow her on Twitter for all up to date info HERE.

Here are a couple of bonus videos, firstly one of my favourite songs done live at The Jazz Cafe recently.

Blessing SB.TV with an acoustic offering.

What is arguably her most commercial sounding song but it’s still great, and Sway makes a nice little appearance on the 12″ version.

Cappo – Loyalty

The Grand Imperial Capps drops a new video for one of the standout tunes from his last LP. Takes me back to the days of bringing him and the P Bros to Oxford and late night drinking of dirty spirits.

Reema Major

First things first, if you’re someone who gets a bit sniffy about any hip hop that sounds vaguely commercial then you should probably click on something else right now. I’ve got plenty of other posts you’d be interested in, try one of them. I’m not here to have any arguments about this kind of thing, my first love is hip hop of all kinds and this is some really good new rap which doesn’t come along every day.

This is the first vid I saw of Reema Major, just randomly on a forum somewhere. She hails from Kansas City and seems to currently live in Toronto. The big thing that I might as well say now is that she is 15 years old. This will be the selling point for most people and will probably attract her a fair amount of publicity. Yes, she’s good for a girl, good for a kid. That doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s good full stop.

She’s just released a new mixtape “I Am Legend” which is sounding good to me on first listen. You can check it at Dat Piff HERE or download it from her site HERE.

Phill Most Chill – All Cuts Recorded Raw

•June 3, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I knew this was in the works but it seems that a little snippet/teaser has just dropped. The guys over at Diggers With Gratitude have consistently put out amazing unreleased material from some of your favourite rappers, regardless of your opinion on the new market for limited releases. Phill Most Chill aka Soulman should be one of your favourite rappers if he’s not already, and it’s also well worth checking what he’s got to say at his blog That Real Schitt.

Pre-orders on DWG start next week but until then check the snippets below:
